University of Florida swamped Jungle Island on Wednesday evening for the school's lone South Florida gathering of 2008 with Gator fans and alumni.
With head football coach Urban Meyer headlining the Gator Club of Miami event, there was no shortage of talk surrounding his starting quarterback, Tim Tebow. The recipient of the 2007 Heisman Trophy, awarded to the nation's top college football player, spent an early portion of 2008 in the Philippines helping doctors perform circumcisions.
The proud fourth-year Gators head coach jokingly expressed concern over the time his star quarterback spends on humanitarian missions in place of preparing for the gridiron."Every once in a while I ask him, 'Are you going to throw some footballs this summer to give us a chance to win?'
"
Meyer is aware, however, that Tebow places his philanthropic obligations ahead of his duties as an athlete. "He plays football because it's a platform to help people,
" said UF's sideline general. "Everything about him is [authentic]: he walks the walk and he talks the talk. He's phenomenal.
