The Gators put an incredible beat down on Ohio State in the BCS championship game, 41-14, stunning the college football world for the school’s second national championship. But their spot in the game was not without some luck, and some controversy. If USC hadn’t lost to UCLA to close out the season, it would have been Trojans vs. Buckeyes for the national championship.
Before that convincing win against Ohio State, many thought the BCS championship game should be a rematch between the Buckeyes and Michigan. Coach Urban Meyer lobbied for the Gators’ place in the BCS title game, and after beating Arkansas in the SEC title game, they got it – by 0.101 points over Michigan in the BCS standings.
UF also had some pretty close calls this season: a 17-16 win over South Carolina in which they needed a block field goal AND blocked extra point from Moss to win. Not to mention a huge rally to beat Tennessee 21-20.
The offense never found its groove with Chris Leak (above) and Tim Tebow splitting time. The defense, though, was stellar. That staunch D proved to be amazing when it counted against Ohio State, stifling Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith and holding the Buckeyes to 82 yards of total offense.
